Obituary of June Mihalov

June Mihalov, Mom of five, Grammy of fourteen and Great-Grammy of ten, friend to everyone she met, passed away on July 25, 2025, in Pittsford, NY, following a brief acute illness complicating longstanding Alzheimer's disease. Lorna June Mihalov was born on August 9, 1932, in Macfarlan, West Virginia to Hazel and George Lewis (Ted) Shimer. She grew up in the hills of West Virginia and moved to Marietta, Ohio as a teen. She graduated from Marietta High School where she was a majorette. She was devoted to exercise all her life, always eager for a walk or stroll up to her final days. She attended Marietta College in Ohio and pledged Sigma Kappa sorority, providing lifelong friends as she was an active alumna of both. At Marietta she met a tall, handsome basketball player, Martin S. (Mike) Mihalov. They married in January of 1953, a few months before she graduated with a degree in home economics. She was eager to start a family, and Linda was born later that year. Mike and June were married for 60 years at his passing in 2013, building a life rooted in faith, service and family. Mike's work took the new family to Maumee, Ohio, where they added Michael, Leslie, Luanne and Lori to their brood. June was an involved mother who volunteered wherever she was needed to support her active children in sports, school and church. She nurtured in her children a life of faith and service to others. She put her home economics degree to daily use, cooking meals from scratch and sewing many of her family's clothes. The family moved to Naperville, IL with a busy family of young children. June always described Naperville as her favorite place to have lived. Over the years, family needs and Mike's work took them to Pittsford, NY, Toms River, NJ, Columbus, Ohio, Honeoye Falls, NY and eventually back to Pittsford. Once her children were all in school, June channeled her industriousness into the workplace. She continued her devotion to improving the lives of young people as she worked in administrative roles in a pediatrics office and in higher education. She especially valued her time at Rochester Institute of Technology and the lifelong friends it afforded her. Her children and grandchildren attended colleges and graduate schools all over the country, settling in different states. June and Mike prioritized traveling far and wide to support their growing family and loved hosting friends and family in their home. June's devotion to her husband was unmatched. After his passing, she moved to The Highlands at Pittsford, where she progressed over the years through the stages of increasing care. At every level, she took part in exercise, activities, and field trips. She was beloved by staff, many of whom called her "Junebug." Her broad smile and genuine curiosity about her fellow humans persisted throughout her life. June was an active member of St Mark Lutheran Church of Mendon, NY. She was devoted to faith, honesty, service and the enduring value of Christmas cards and thank-you notes. She enjoyed a good laugh and a nice glass of wine, but disdained beer! June was pre-deceased by her parents and only sibling Joe. June is survived by her children and their families: Linda Mihalov (Ron Hanlon) of Seattle WA, Walker Adamson (Kim), Roxanne and Everett Adamson of Torrance, CA, Riley Adamson (Alex Button) of Los Angeles, CA and Rob Hanlon (Liz Rush) of Seattle WA; Michael Mihalov (Jackie Sieros) of Chicago IL, Sarah Mihalov (Arturo Lara), Itasca IL, Daniel Mihalov (Jennie Pride), Ellie and Bridget Mihalov of Chicago; Leslie Mihalov (Gary Katz) of Columbus OH, Andrew Katz (Jen), Theo and Oliver Katz of Bexley, OH, Mallory Katz of Columbus, OH, Morgan Katz of Beverly, MA; Luanne Mansfield (Dave) of Honeoye Falls, NY, Jon Mansfield (Megan), Allison and Jack Mansfield of Honeoye Falls NY, Kristen Valencia (Hugo), Hugo David and Leon Valencia of Pittsford, NY, Brian Mansfield of Rochester NY and Katie Mansfield of Rochester NY; Lori Randall (Sonny) of Lake Forest, IL, Samuel Randall of Bellingham, WA, Anna and Adam Randall of Lake Forest IL. June's Finnish "daughter", Erja Kyrola, of Helsinki, has been a cherished member of the Mihalov family since her high school exchange student experience with Lori. June leaves many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She enjoyed outings and conversations (and a regular supply of fresh chocolate chip cookies!) with her steadfast dear friend from RIT, Rosie Sepos. June's children are especially grateful for the ceaseless devotion of sister Luanne Mansfield, who best exemplifies June's values of love, loyalty and service. She cared selflessly for both June and Mike, and during June's declining years, she, Dave and their children seamlessly incorporated Grammy into their increasingly busy lives. June loved the opportunity Leslie and Gary provided her to spend many joyful days in the sun in Bonita Springs FL. The entire family appreciates the loving attention June received from the staff at all levels of care at The Highlands at Pittsford. The respectful tribute given by the staff at the Highlands Living Center during the final procession of her earthly body will remain in the family's hearts forever. Family and friends will gather to honor and celebrate June's remarkable life and legacy on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 18 Victor Mendon Rd in Mendon, NY. Calling hours/visitation will begin at 1:30pm followed by a Memorial service at 3:00pm. June's ashes will rest with her husband Mike in Hazelton PA and with her parents in Wolverton WV. Memorial donations may be directed to Marietta College (Marietta.edu/give) or the Alzheimer's Association (donorservices.alz.org).
