Lewis M. "Lew" Gurley Obituary
Lewis M. Gurley, age 84, passed away on Friday, July 31. In his final days, he was blessed to spend time with all three of his sons and two of his granddaughters in person, while also sharing heartfelt FaceTime visits with two other grandchildren. These precious moments gave his family the opportunity to express their love and say their goodbyes.
Lew is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Judy; his three sons, Mark, Matt, and Bob; his five grandchildren, Zech, Grace, Kristy, Lexy, and Marie Isabela; and three great-grandchildren through Matt's daughter, Kristi.
Lew lived a full and meaningful life. He was devoted to his family, who loved and admired him deeply, and he enjoyed a distinguished career in public service. He served as Regional Director for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation before becoming Regional Director for the New York State Department of Transportation, a position he held until his retirement. Even after retiring, he continued to share his expertise as a consultant with Clough, Harbour & Associates in Pennsylvania.
While Lew took great pride in his work, his life extended far beyond his profession. Guided by a deep and abiding faith, he felt called to serve others and dedicated himself to many churches over the years in a variety of ministries. In his final years, he found great joy and fellowship with his church family at St. John's Episcopal Church in Honeoye Falls, NY.
Lew also embraced life through the outdoors and the friendships he cherished. He loved golfing, skiing, biking, hiking, eco-traveling, bowling, and gathering around the card table with his poker buddies.
Although Lew lived, worked, and served with excellence, it is his generous heart, genuine kindness, quick wit, corny jokes delivered with a sly smile, and unwavering love that will be remembered most by all who knew him.
While his family grieves his passing, they also find comfort in their faith. This is not a final goodbye. They rejoice in knowing that Lew's soul is now at peace and look forward to the day they will be reunited with him.
In honor of Lew's life and the causes that were closest to his heart, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to The Nature Conservancy or Open Door Mission in Rochester, New York.
