Leona Guild

Obituary of Leona Ferne Guild

LEONA LEWIS GUILD Born at home on the family farm in Hunlock Creek, PA on September 6, 1915. Leona was the only surviving child of a large family of ten children. She peacefully passed away on February 4, 2016 at the age of 100 at Cayuga Ridge Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, the love of her life, Reverend Arthur C Guild, daughter Ruth Guild Evans, son Dr. Phillip V. Guild, grandson Timothy Evans and granddaughter Kimberly Evans. She is survived by her daughter and caregiver Ellen Guild Morley, and three sons Arthur Guild, David Guild, and Mark Guild; 17 Grandchildren, 28 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren. Mom’s whole life was geared toward helping others, and she was known for her infectious laughter and bright smile. It was hard to be sad when Mom was around. Until the age of 90, she would often be seen ferrying the “old folks” to the store, a doctor’s appointment, church, or wherever they might need to go. She never left home without her hand written joke book, and was always looking for someone she thought needed a laugh. (Much to the chagrin of her children, she was known to approach total strangers in a restaurant with a joke, because “they look like they needed cheering up”) Mom did lots of volunteer work in her church and community. Her favorite was at the now closed “thrift shop” of Strong Memorial Hospital where she was awarded her 20 year pin. Mom would take items that were unsaleable because of stains, missing buttons, broken zippers, rips or tears, and all other maladies and bring them home for repair. She was happiest when she was able to give her refurbished clothing to people in need, and it amounted to “truck loads” over the years. Other examples of her giving spirit are too numerus to name in this tribute, but suffice it to say the world lost a wonderful caring, loving and giving woman. Special THANKS from Mom: To my daughter Ellen, who unselfishly put her life on hold to provide loving care to me until the end; and my daughter-in-law Bertha who was a constant source of help, love and support to me for many years. A Memorial Service - Celebration of Life and reception will be held June 11, 2016 at the Honeoye Falls First Presbyterian Church at 1 pm.
