Obituary of Eleanor W Jones

Eleanor Edith Wilkinson Jones - born in Bridgewater, NY to Claud Howland Wilkinson and Edith Greenleaf Wilkinson - passed away peacefully on Monday, November 24, 2014. Her 92 years were filled with caring, service to others, a love of nature, a penchant for crafts and philanthropy, and a strong streak of independence. After earning High School and College Entrance Diplomas in 1941 from Bridgewater Central School, Eleanor embarked on a long career in nursing that began with OB/GYN work in Utica Memorial Hospital. She served for one year as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army Nurse Corps during WW II and earned an honorable discharge. She then provided OB/GYN nursing care at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester NY. After spending some time off to raise her three children, Eleanor regained registered nurse status in 1979 and worked for 10 more years in geriatric care at F.F. Thompson Hospital, Canandaigua, NY. After her retirement, Eleanor contributed hundreds of hours of volunteer work to help geriatric patients at the Wesley-on-East nursing home. In 1945 Eleanor married Lendol Humphreys, and in 1946 gave birth to a daughter, Nancy. Over most of the following decade, she raised Nancy on her own before marrying Robert Hugh (Bob) Jones in 1955 and having two boys, Robert Hugh Jones Jr. (1956) and Clifford Owen Jones (1959). Eleanor enjoyed camping, hiking, and wildflowers. Her summer vacations usually entailed several weeks at a country property she and Bob owned in Steuben County. Her interests in crafts included crochet and ornaments. Eleanor became especially well known for excellent sugar cookies with seasonal shapes, frosting, and decorations. She gave away virtually all of her crafts and cookies, or sold them to support charities. Her kindness, love, and nursing support have touched many, including her three children and their spouses, four grandchildren and their spouses, seven great grandchildren, the congregation at Honeoye Falls United Methodist Church, and hundreds of neighbors, friends, and patients. She will be dearly missed. A memorial service will be held in spring at the Honeoye Falls United Methodist Church.
