Obituary of James Gareth Poupore

The Reverend James Gareth Poupore, C.S.B., of Honeoye Falls, age 90, died on Sunday, October 28, 2012 in Rochester, New York following a brief illness. He was born to Edward and Catherine Poupore on September 19, 1922 in Pembroke, Ontario. During World War II, Fr. Poupore served in the Royal Air Force and in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an officer in the Alouette Squadron. Following his honorable discharge at the end of the war, he returned to Canada and enrolled at St. Michael's College in Toronto graduating with a degree in History, and later took a Masters degree from the University of Toronto. He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood on June 29, 1953 in Toronto as a priest in the Congregation of St. Basil. During his long career as an academic, Fr. Poupore taught in Toronto, Vancouver, Houston and finally in Rochester at St. John Fisher College where he was chairman of the History Department at the time of his retirement. In 2010, he was awarded the President's Medal for Contributions to St. John Fisher College. To the end, he remained an engaged reader and conversationalist on a wide variety of topics from Chinese Art to his great passion, Medieval history. During his years in Rochester, Fr. Poupore assisted at Our Lady Queen of Peace parish in Brighton. Following his retirement, he moved to Honeoye Falls and assisted at both St. Paul of the Cross in Honeoye Falls and at St. Rose in Lima. Gareth is predeceased by his parents, his brother Gregory Poole (Poupore), and his sisters Nora Poirier and Isobel Lance. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Haramis of Aurora, Ontario and many nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to call at the Merton H. Kays Funeral Home, Inc. 59 Monroe Street, Honeoye Falls on Friday, November 2, 2012 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. Fr. Poupore will lie in state, Saturday November 3, 2012 from 9 am to 9:45 am at St. Rose Church, 1985 Lake Avenue, Lima where his Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 am, The Most Reverend Matthew H. Clark, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Rochester will preside. Interment will follow at St. Rose Cemetery in Lima. Flowers are gratefully declined, and donations in Fr. Poupore's memory may be made to St. Rose Catholic Church, P.O. Box 8A, Lima, NY 14485.
