My "Old Uncle Donald" as he liked to refer to himself, was a great and quiet man. Donald was a dedicated father to John and Dale Thorp as well as loving husband to their mother Bella Thorp who passed away in 1982. Uncle Donald continued to be a faithful husband to his second wife Mary for thirty plus years. Donald was a brave WWII D Day Navy Corpsman veteran who had his ship blown up beneath him on June 23 1944 by a german sea mine in the English channel. My Uncle Donald continued to not only rescue and save many others but also was able to save himself to continue to serve in the Navy. I would encourage all who loved Donald Thorp or are interested in local heroes to find the entire well written article archived in the Honeoye Falls Sentinel, Vol 12 Number 11, published Thursday June 1st, 2000. I would encourage the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle to republish this informative article to honor your local fallen and cherished hero. I will always remember Uncle Donald for his jokes "the Free little Thrigs" and "Mrs Potts Pit". Uncle Donald was a great story teller and could entertain us as children on his banjo. Uncle Donald always loved gardening and would always share his produce with everyone. Uncle Donald taught me how to eat and love raw vegetables right out of the ground. Uncle Donald even adapted to the modern era by becoming quite the salesman on Ebay! I love you Uncle Donald. You were and will remain a blessing to all of us in the family. Perhaps the world could use a few more stalwart Vermont grown men of faith like Donald Thorp,...Uncle Donald will be missed and remembered. Nephew Steve McNally from the Thorp side of the family. (Donald's sister Ruby is my mother)

Uncle Donald, what can you say.
He'd been in my life from my earliest memories. As a boy I remember that he could fix anything & have it be better than the original.
Looking at him perplexed as I tried to grasp his stories that he laid out at lightning speed.
Picking vegetables with him in his garden & learning the finer points of composte.
Honing my Cribbage & card playing skills against his experience & wit.
As a young man I was able to have long conversations with him & all I had to do was ask leading questions & his natural story telling would take over.
He's always been a part of my life & one of the pillars of the Thorp clan.
Though I will miss not being able to see him again he has left me full of good things which is what anyone hopes to do in their life. He left a good deposit in me personally & I'm sure in those he dealt with daily.
A good man I'm proud to call Uncle.

My Uncle Donald is a piece of my life & part of what I am. The Thorps created a family bond felt & enjoyed by me & all "the 1st cousins" (the river flows around the rock.......). This has given me a life anchor I am lucky to have & so grateful for.
As a child, my Uncle Donald was approachable, engaging, & wiling to give his time & attention. I am proud to come from this kind of honor, courage, & commitment.
I too have the Honeoye Falls article referred to by others. It will always serve as a reminder, along with the 1903 Indian Head penny he gave me, of the treasure I have been given in this life.
The man, the stories, the memories are what he gave me & are what I have with me now. I love you Uncle Donald & thank you.
To my cousin Jay, I love you & am with you in heart & spirit always.
To my cousin Dale, you are a part of the same piece of fabric & I love you.
To my mom Ruby Thorp McNally, I know how much your big brother meant to you. I love you mom & we will always be there for each other.

Our "Old Uncle Donald" was the guy who's picture you would see if you looked up the definition of "Salt of the Earth". There wasn't a finer or more generous gentleman anywhere. He regaled all of us kids with his tongue twisting stories at numerous family get-togethers, and we hung on every word. I think he brought joy to all those who knew him. A member of the "Greatest Generation" and a veteran of the horrors of WWII, he was a hero to his family - especially to his sisters Juanita (my mom), Eleanor, and Ruby. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.

I first met "dear old uncle Donald " in 1981 during a trip across country with his nephew Mickey. His gardens in Honeoye Falls were bountiful and his flowers were beautiful. I respect him for his duty during World War II and loved his comical stories he recited during future family reunions.

I remember all the wonderful vegetables from his garden when we would visit. And that he was a great story teller. Family reunions always had requests for certain stories and jokes we expected to hear from him.

I meet Don some 25 years ago when my family moved to Honeoye Falls.
He was truly one of the Greatest Generation. Civic minded and always an active member of the community.
A life time member of the Mendon Conservation League, always ending our meetings with a joke. Some years back I ask Don if he shot trap or skeet, I haven't touched a gun since the end of the war, was all he said. Later I learned that Don was a Navy Corpsman landing in Europe on D-day. The courage and quiet strength of those returning to live a life was exemplified by Don.

Having known Don for over 35yrs. I can say that he was one -of- a- kind.He took interest in many varied things, even having a restaurant one time.
While he sometimes took opposite positions on local matters, it was usually with the best of intentions.
He was a Navy veteran and served our country and will be missed.
