Obituary of George H. Martin

George Harwood Martin of Honeoye Falls, died peacefully August 18, 2010, at the age of 87. He was born the son of Harwood and Edith Schrader Martin on May 7, 1923 in Rochester, N.Y. George loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. His love for nature extended to a broad knowledge of birds and other wild life, trees and plants. Also very dear to his heart were Cornell University and the Boy Scouts of America. He gave countless hours to supporting young people in their pursuit of higher education and scouting. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband and father who delighted in having his children and grandchildren gathered around him, sharing all of his outdoor interests while taking great pleasure in their activities and accomplishments. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anne Brooks Jennings Martin; his children, Jane (Antreas) Ghazarossian, William (Judy) Martin, Mary Anne (Douglas) Jones and James Martin; grandchildren, Brooks (Don) Eleck, Emily (Brian) Bielen, Oliver Martin, Jessa (Forgan) McIntosh, Trevor (Alison) Jones, Cameron Jones, James Martin, Sarah Martin and George Martin; great grandchildren, Isabelle Bielen, George Bielen, James Eleck and Grace Lindsay Eleck; several nieces and nephews. George graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1947. He was elected to the Quill and Dagger Society and Alpha Phi Omega (national honor society at Cornell). He was also a Cornell University athlete: swim team, named captain his senior year and earning three varsity letters, and rifle team, again earning three varsity letters. After graduation he served as an active member of the Cornell University Alumni Council. George served his country in the Eighth Air Force from 1942-1945, was stationed in England for 18 months and was honorably discharged with a rank of Sergeant. He retired in 1989 as vice president of Shearson Lehman American Express, where he worked as an investment advisor for 17 years. From 1947 to 1972 he was President and CEO of Dutch Hollow Foods, Corp., a regional dairy products company in Honeoye Falls, N.Y. George was very involved in the community. He served on the Executive Boards of Rochester General Hospital, Visiting Nurse Service and the Otetiana Council of Boy Scouts of America (now called the Seneca Waterways Council). He was chairman of the Tomahawk District, BSA (Rochester), and chairman of the Eagle Board of Review, Otetiana Council. He also served on the Conservation Board of the Town of Mendon. Among his many accomplishments he achieved Eagle Scout rank at the age of 15. In 1973, he received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America, which is the highest award given by BSA for volunteer leadership. In 2003, he was elected to the Honeoye Falls-Lima Alumni Hall of Fame. George was a Corporate Board Member of Rando Machine Corporation, Waverly Creamery, Inc., Waverly, N.Y. and Sunset Farms, Inc. in Newark, N.Y. He was a member of the Country Club of Rochester, having served on its Board of Directors, and a former member of the University Club of Rochester. His affiliations included: Small Business Association of Rochester; National Eagle Scout Association; YMCA; Red Cross; US Army Air Force; National Rifle Association; Boy Scouts of America, Troop 10; Rochester Brooks International Trap & Skeet Club; Bent Barrel Hunting Club and Bent Pin Fishing Club. Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of George's life on Friday, October 1, 2010 at the Country Club of Rochester, 2935 East Avenue, Rochester, N.Y. from 4-6 pm. Gifts may be given in his memory to the Seneca Waterways Council (formerly Otetiana Council) of Boy Scouts of America, 474 East Avenue, Rochester, N.Y., 14607.
