Martin Mihalov

Obituary of Martin S. Mihalov

Martin S. Mihalov "Mike" of Honeoye Falls, NY passed away March 19, 2013 at Strong Memorial Hospital. He was the youngest of 12 children born to Jan and Anna Mihalov on November 21, 1925 in Hazleton, PA. After high school graduation, he served 4 years in the Naval Air Corps during World War II and then graduated with honors from Marietta College in Marietta, OH. There he distinguished himself on the basketball court, the crew team and in leadership positions, winning several prestigious awards. He met his bride, June Shimer, at Marietta, and they remain loyal supporters of their alma mater. Mike's career in business and science took his growing family to Maumee, Oh, Naperville, IL, Pittsford, NY, Toms River, NJ, and Columbus, OH. In retirement, they settled in Honeoye Falls, NY where Mike was involved with his church and enjoyed lifelong learning at OSHER. Ever an inquisitive mind, he was known for his curiosity about those around him, and relished a great "small world" story. He was proud of his Slovak heritage and was privileged to visit his family's roots in Slovakia in 2005. Mike suffered a cardiac arrest in 2000 but was saved by technology, and lived many more years by the grace of God and the best of modern science. He maintained his sharp mind, uncanny wit and humble heart until his body gave out, and he died peacefully with his loving wife, his daughter, Luanne and grandson Jon, by his side. Besides his wife of 60 years, Mike is survived by his children and their families, of whom he was tremendously proud: Linda Mihalov and Ron Hanlon and Rob Hanlon of Seattle, WA, Walker and Riley Adamson of Los Angeles; Michael Mihalov and Jackie Sieros of Bannockburn, IL, Sarah and Daniel Mihalov of Chicago, IL; Leslie Mihalov and Gary Katz, Andrew and Mallory Katz of Columbus, OH and Morgan Katz of Denton, TX; Luanne and David Mansfield, Jonathan, Kristen, Brian and Katie Mansfield of Honeoye Falls, NY; Lori and Sonny Randall, Samuel, Anna and Adam Randall of Saratoga, CA; Finnish 'daughter', Erja Eskola of Espoo, Finland and many cherished nieces and nephews. A Service of Celebration and Remembrance will be held at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 18 Victor-Mendon Road, Mendon, NY on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 11 am. His family will receive friends at an open house on Friday, March 22 from 3-8 pm at 45 Boughton Hill Road, Honeoye Falls, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Marietta College; Office of Advancement, 215 5th St, Marietta, OH 45750 www.marietta.edu/give or Healing Art Missions in Dumay, Haiti; PO Box 645, Granville, OH 43023 www.healingartmissions.org in memory of our husband, father and hero.
