Obituary of Robert Howard Glines
Robert H. Glines, age 70, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the Keuka Comfort Care Home in Penn Yan, NY.
He is survived by his sons Brian R. Glines (Katie) of Moon Township, PA; Timothy J. Glines of Bloomington, IL; Andrew M. Glines of Hillsboro, OR; daughter Kathleen A. Glines of Washington, DC; four grandsons: Samuel and Max Glines of Moon Township plus Daniel and Mark Glines of Charleston, WV; sister Leslie Glines Jones of Warren, RI; and former wife Carol Miller of Canandaigua, NY.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Anne Glines (nee Mangan); and parents W. Leslie Glines and Barbara I. Glines.
Mr. Glines was born March 28, 1940 in Attleboro, MA and resided in Foxboro, MA until 1950 when his family moved to Newark, NY. In 1958, Mr. Glines enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was an electronic technician with duties aboard the icebreaker U.S.S. Edisto and with LORAC Team 3, assisting in the installation of the SOSUS detection system along the Atlantic coast.
Mr. Glines joined General Railway Signal Company (GRS) in November of 1962 as a commercial engineer and retired early in December of 2003. He provided engineering, sales and business development services for GRS and its subsequent owners SASIB Signaling and Alstom Signaling. Mr. Glines also held senior level positions for Parsons Brinckerhoff T&RS, Gannett Fleming T&RS, Rail Transit Systems, Inc.. He ended his working career as an advisor on the board of directors of ETA Transit Systems. His transit industry relationships spanned North America, Western Europe and Japan. His projects involved bus information systems, train control, microwave systems, public safety communications, high speed rail, driverless transit, Communications Based Train Control and special automation systems for mining operations.
Mr. Glines held leadership positions with industry associations, serving as a director on the board of the American Public Transportation Association, a member of APTA's Business Member Board of Governors for 22 years, The Railway Progress Institute's Vice-Chairman for Passenger Transportation for 13 years and was a charter member of the High Speed Rail Association. Mr. Glines was honored with the Wilmer W. Salmon Award, by his associates at GRS, for his contributions while in their employ.
Mr. Glines' last wish was that all say prayers for the repose of the soul of Anne Glines, the most beloved of his life.
Friends may gather for a 11 am graveside ceremony at the Honeoye Falls Cemetery in Honeoye Falls, NY on April 9, 2011.
