Dorothy Allen

Obituary of Dorothy R. Allen

Dorothy (Dottie) M. Allen (Rowe) Passed away June 19, 2011 at the fine age of 92. Born July 13, 1918 in Rochester, NY, she is predeceased by her husband, Stainton, son John and brothers Tom, Bill and Jack. Dottie was the last Rowe of her generation. She is survived by her son David of San Antonio, TX, daughter Sarah Standish (Kim) of Palmyra, NY, her very special granddaughter Caitlin Standish of NYC, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews in NY, NJ, CA and GA. A graduate of Nazareth Academy in Rochester, she continued her education by enrolling in the Rochester Business Institute. Graduation from RBI was followed by four years of service to her country in the Navy and, upon her discharge, Dottie accepted a position as an executive secretary at the Democrat and Chronicle, a position she thoroughly enjoyed. With her marriage to Stainton Allen, the two took up residence at 29 Ontario St. in Honeoye Falls, the Allen family home, and she devoted her life to raising her family and satisfying her passion for art, antiques and worthy community causes. There was no one who enjoyed cooking and entertaining more than she, and her home became a hub of activity year round. Holidays were always memorable occasions, and it became a tradition for family and friends alike to gather at the Allen home. She truly liked nothing better. Dottie was a long time member of St. Paul of the Cross Church in Honeoye Falls. In later years a transfer to the corporate offices of Emerson Electric in NYC for Stainton took the Allens to Upper Montclair, NJ for a year and then back to Honeoye Falls. Upon his retirement they moved to Sarasota, FL, where Dottie continued to pursue those same passions. The birth of their granddaughter in 1988 heralded a return to Rochester a few years later to be closer to family, making Linden Knoll their final residence. "You know, we'll be taking off soon, and I just wanted to say how delightful it was being here."- Dottie Allen Nothing exemplifies Dottie more than this statement, made shortly before she passed. She was a remarkable woman of quiet grace, humility and understanding who embraced all the tragedy and joy life presented to her with an unwavering faith. Hers is an irreplaceable spirit and we are forever thankful for her presence in our lives. We wish to extend a very special thank you to all the staff of the Friendly Home who was involved in Dottie's care these last few months. Your skills and compassion are true gifts, and we hope you realize just how special you were to her in the last months of her life. A service of celebration will be held at St. Thomas More Church, 2617 East Ave., Rochester, NY on Friday, June 24 at 11:00AM with a reception immediately following at the church.
