Obituary of Helen V. Baier
Helen Virginia "Ginny" Baier of Rush, died October 10, 2013 at age 89. Virginia was born in Syracuse, NY the daughter of the late Harry and Phyllis Hudson. She was a graduate of Syracuse Central HS and the U of R School of Nursing, class of '49, and continued her education with refresher courses at St. John Fisher. After HS, she worked for Mr. Brannock the inventor of the Brannoch measuring device for shoes. Before nursing school and after WWII, Ginny worked for the Army Corp. of Engineers starting in mail and records and later as currier delivering classified documents. She was promoted to head the Engineering Library and eventually was ordered to Oak Ridge, Tenn., the secret facility integral to the development of the Manhattan Project. In lieu of that assignment she fulfilled a life long ambition by attending nursing school. After graduation from U of R, Virginia worked several years as an obstetric nurse in LaFayette, Indiana while Joe completed his undergraduate degree at Purdue. After Joe's graduation, the couple moved to Rochester where Virginia worked for Dr Fred Fumia, and later as a private duty nurse. It was during that time she ran a small antique shop in Rush with a close friend. In later years, Ginny worked as special events nurse at the Dome Arena in Henrietta for rock concerts.
"Virginia had a great zest for Life", as a friend once noted. She was an optimistic lady with a great curiosity and enthusiasm for Life and all it's adventures. She had an award winning smile, a kind heart, and robust sense of humor. She valued education and took pride in the fact that both her daughters were local college graduates. Her many loves included teaching, duplicate bridge, her role as a Girl Scout leader, and antiquing. Ginny traveled extensively in her senior years through the US, Europe, and her beloved Canada. Over the years she found fellowship in the company of her family, as a member of Quarry Club, Bridge Club, Ingleside Literary Club, and a devoted sisterhood with her dear Lima friends and nursing classmates spanning 60- 70 yrs. Her lifelong friendships were legendary, as were her loyalty to her family and friend's.
She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Joseph Baier; daughters, Holly Baier Simon (Bob), Stacy Baier Chakma (Anomadarshi); niece Pamela Baier Norlander (Dick)
