I remember Mrs. Starkweather so well through both the library and her daughter Mary, my childhood friend. She was a wonderful person with whom I adored visiting whenever I went to the library. She was always helpful in answering my (endless!) questions or helping me find the next book that would take me on a great adventure. She exuded kindness and made everyone feel welcome and loved both in the library and in her home. She truly was one of a kind.

I had the privilege of serving a good number of years on the Rush Public Library Board of Trustees when Joan was our library director. After her retirement, Pat and I would still run into her frequently around town and it was uniformly a pleasure when we did. She was always compassionate and caring, with a great, wry sense of humor. She cared about her town, her neighbors, her family. She was not just a resident of Rush, she was “an institution” within our community. The town is a much better place due to her.
Our sincere condolences to her family.

I met Joan at St. Joseph’s Church years ago and she always had a smile and kind words to make you feel she was especially glad to see you. I have many memories of Joan but these stand out…her love of God and others, her stories of the “Joan’s Club”, her special love for her granddaughter Leah, and seeing her riding her bicycle in Rush with her husband. I’m so grateful to have known her and my prayers go out to all her family.

I'm so very sorry to hear about Joan. I met her when I worked as a summer work- study student page when I was an undergraduate student at SUNY @ Geneseo. She was always kind and helpful. A truly lovely lady to know and to work with. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.
Take care, Pat Lafleur

Joan was a class act from beginning to end. When I was Library Director of Gates Public Library many years ago WXXI had an interview with Joan and myself on the topic of 'Should small libraries be required to employ a library director with an MLS ;Masters in Library Science'? Joan had her degree from the U of R but not an MLS. I had an MLS but also a year pre-MLS as the director of the Warsaw Public Library in Wyoming County. So I saw both sides of the topic. We had a good sharing of our thoughts and the experience cemented in my mind what a fine and excellent librarian Joan was. Later when I moved to Rush, I came to know more of Joan the person. I will miss her greatly and I am sorry for her passing. Susan Swanton

Joan was a lovely woman who hired me to work at the Rush Library to read stories to pre-school children; that gesture led to a position of serving the community of the Rush Library for more than 20 years. She also introduced me to the "Joan" party which has been happening every year for decades. She was always quick with a smile and never forgot the tiniest details of your life. She was a friend to me and of many. She will surely be missed. Joan Celentano

I also had the privilege of working with Joan at the Henrietta Public Library. Calm, competent, and always kind, she was a unfailing asset to the library and friend to those who worked there.
I recently had the pleasure of seeing her again when she came for a tour of the new Henrietta library almost 40 years later.
I apologize for not attending her calling hours but Covid is keeping me home.
My sympathy for your loss.

Joan Starkweather will live forever in the hearts of the grown-up children of Rush, as well as all the other patrons of the Rush Public Library in the years when she was the director. She was a friendly, cheerful, kind and gentle person; and she lent that presence to the library. She shared with everyone who came to the library a love of books that they will carry with them throughout life and pass on to others.
May her family know how much the townspeople of Rush appreciated her and will miss her.
