Bill Smith posted a condolence

Steve Williams did indeed live his life modestly, no fan fare so to speak. I always admired that about him. A man who was so accomplished and knowledgeable, yet not full of himself. He could be a very tough boss, but not just to be tough - there was reason behind whatever he did and whatever he said. I learned a multitude of not just work skills, but life skills from Steve. He didn’t show it often, but he had quite a sense of humor, and really did like having fun. I don’t know many other people who conduct themselves with the level of integrity and honesty that Steve always showed. I’ll miss him.

Steve was always busy, usually working, and usually outside. It was strange to see him not that way. He built their home on a hill on a solid foundation. That's how he seemed to me, solid. He helped teach me some good practices of working and gave the latitude to do it, but if was not how he wanted it done, he would tell you how to do it. He was one of the most diligent individuals that I have ever known.

Steve was a part of our holiday ritual each year - selecting a Christmas tree, We could come in August or wait until November. We always had a good chat, talked about his dogs and what the winter weather predictions were possible for the coming season, He loved his tree farm and loved having a dog follow his every step. My sincere sympathy to you all.

Steve was my mentor. Among countless other matters, he showed me how to make a rock garden. I always admired him. I'm glad we became friends after my golf course "career." He was a friend to my daughters too.
