Obituary of Frederick Walter Muhs

Frederick Walter Muhs, "Freddie" of Brighton, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at age 96. He is survived by his beloved wife Catherine "Katie"; son, Barry (Ann) Muhs; stepdaughters, Bonnie (John) Bean; Nancy (John) Love; Deborah McGowan and Linda (Michael) Mack Jenks. Niece, June Hebert. 5 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Additionally, there are many other relatives and friends that were an important part of his life. Fred was born the son of Charles and Anna Cook Muhs on October 4, 1912 in Rochester, NY. He grew up in the town of Henrietta and later lived in Rush and most recently Brighton. In the 1930's, after high school he became a farmer. When the US entered World War II, Fred served his country for 3 years from January 23, 1943 to February 22, 1946 in the Army Air Corps as a radar operator. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. When Fred entered civilian life again, he worked at several occupations before joining the Rush-Henrietta School System. He worked his way up to Maintenance Supervisor and retired in 1977 after 30 years. Fred was a member and Past Commander of the Stevens-Connor American Legion Post 1330. He was a member of the Rush Fire Department and the West Henrietta Fire Department. Tom Brokaw wrote about "The Greatest Generation", and Fred was part of that generation. Special thanks to Linda Mack Jenks and to Lifetime Care Hospice at Unity Health. Family and friends may call Thursday, April 2, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Merton H. Kays Funeral Home, Inc., 59 Monroe Street, Honeoye Falls, where Services will be held Friday, Aril 3 at 11 am. Burial, Maplewood Cemetery, Henrietta. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lifetime Care Hospice, 3111 Winton Road South, Rochester, NY 14623 or to the Rush Volunteer Fire Department, 1971 Rush-Mendon Road, Rush, NY 14543.
